This Site…
I made this site for a variety of reasons…
- Always wanted to have my own site with a domain. For the poor sites that I have interacted with over the years and complained with the line ‘I could make a better site than this’… well I’m giving it a try, to see if I can actually make something better.
- Expand my skills… my background is in a few different areas… physics, robotics, C++ programming, computation, image processing, data science… it is not in web development. So making this site helps me learn some web technologies. Also, this site is hosted on a Google Cloud virtual machine instance; so it helps learning a few things about the google cloud platform.
- Pride… other hosting services do all the heavy lifting in terms of web hosting. Other than using wordpress and a few packages, everything is my own doing. From server setup, scripts, any UI/UX style choices, and content. I want to see how far I can take with mainly using some simple tools (command line, vi, google…)
- Data… by hosting this on my own, I can examine some data (mainly what’s popular and users)
- To host a different things…
- Portfolio projects to possibly show an employer that I’ve got some skills and willing to learn more.
- Some silly side projects that I have made over the years that others may find useful
- Some links to some music so I can listen to some tracks where I go
Other Stuff…
- Every so often I like building things (like furniture or cabinets). The main thing is the amount of time and space I have. I don’t know how well those would translate to this site.
- On occasion, I like programming stuff that might appear to be a bit useless (like this). The main motivation is that I find it interesting
